HDFC Bank CEO Sashidhar Jagdishan to Step Down on October 26

Sashidhar Jagdishan, Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of HDFC Bank, will retire from the private sector lender on October 26, 2026, after deciding not to seek reappointment to the position.

In a regulatory filing dated August 29, HDFC Bank said Jagdishan had conveyed his decision to the board. The board noted his communication at its meeting and said that, despite efforts to persuade him to reconsider, Jagdishan reiterated his decision.

He will retire from HDFC Bank’s services at the close of business hours on October 26, 2026.

Leadership During a Period of Transformation

Jagdishan has been associated with HDFC Bank for several years and has led the lender through a period of significant transformation, including its merger with Housing Development Finance Corporation (HDFC).

In its regulatory filing, the bank’s board acknowledged Jagdishan’s “commitment, leadership and contribution” to HDFC Bank’s growth and stability. It also recognised his role in the successful completion of the merger, which the bank described as one of the largest mergers in corporate India.

Successor Search to Be Fast-Tracked

With Jagdishan’s departure confirmed, HDFC Bank said it will fast-track the process of selecting and appointing his successor well within time.

The regulatory filing did not disclose details about a potential successor or the candidates currently being considered for the Managing Director and CEO position.

Jagdishan’s retirement will mark a leadership transition at HDFC Bank as the lender continues to navigate the next phase of its growth following the integration of the HDFC group’s housing finance business.
