Indian Express Group Partners with OpenAI to Bring Indian Journalism to ChatGPT

The Indian Express Group and OpenAI have announced a strategic partnership aimed at helping more consumers discover and engage with the Group’s original journalism through ChatGPT.

Under the partnership, content from participating Express Group publications will become more discoverable in ChatGPT. When selected summaries or excerpts are surfaced in response to relevant queries, the results will identify the source and provide direct links to the original articles, allowing readers to access the full reporting and analysis on the publisher’s platforms.

Partnership Covers Multiple Express Group Publications

The initial partnership will include content from The Indian Express and The Financial Express, along with the Group’s business properties.

The arrangement will cover both live reporting and archived content across seven languages – English, Hindi, Marathi, Malayalam, Tamil, Bengali and Gujarati.

The move is intended to create another discovery channel for the Group’s journalism while maintaining a direct connection between readers and the original publisher.

Indian Express Digital Highlights Editorial Independence

Nandagopal Rajan, CEO, Indian Express Digital, said the Group’s legacy of investigations, news breaks and diverse voices across the political spectrum makes it distinctive in Indian media.

He said the Group has remained open to new technologies and that the partnership would provide another way for readers to discover reporting from its national network of journalists, with clear attribution and a direct route to the original source.

Rajan also emphasised that credible journalism and full editorial responsibility would remain the Group’s priority as technology changes how audiences discover and consume information.

OpenAI Focuses on Discovery of Original Journalism

Shetty said the partnership is intended to help more people discover that work through ChatGPT while maintaining clear attribution and links to the publisher’s original content.

He added that the partnership reflects OpenAI’s broader effort to work with publishers and develop technology that can support journalists, readers and the wider news ecosystem.

Editorial Control Remains With Indian Express Group

The Indian Express Group will retain complete and independent editorial control over its journalism under the partnership.

OpenAI will not determine which stories the Group reports, how those stories are produced or the editorial conclusions reached by its journalists.

This means editorial decisions will continue to remain with the publisher and its newsroom.

Exploring AI Applications Beyond Content Discovery

The two organisations will also explore how OpenAI technology could support new reader experiences and practical workflows across the Indian Express Group.

Potential areas identified by the companies include archive discovery, research, data analysis, translation, reader services and business operations.

Any editorial application of these tools will remain subject to the Group’s existing standards, policies and human oversight.
