NetApp Plans PEAK:AIO Acquisition to Accelerate AI Infrastructure Innovation

NetApp (NASDAQ: NTAP), the intelligent data infrastructure company, has announced its intent to acquire PEAK:AIO, a company specialising in next-generation metadata architecture and high-performance parallel file systems.

The planned acquisition is expected to strengthen NetApp’s AI infrastructure roadmap by adding PEAK:AIO’s metadata services and parallel namespace technology. The combined capabilities are designed to help AI clouds scale shared storage alongside increasingly large GPU clusters.

As artificial intelligence becomes embedded across enterprise workloads, organisations are facing growing demands on their underlying data infrastructure. Traditional storage architectures were not designed for the scale, concurrency and performance requirements of AI factories, AI clouds and other data-intensive applications.

NetApp is developing an architecture that separates metadata from data, allowing metadata services to scale independently. The company says this approach is designed to provide a foundation for AI infrastructure capable of supporting trillions of files, exabyte-scale environments and massively parallel workloads.

The proposed acquisition builds on NetApp’s strategy to address the expanding AI infrastructure market. By combining PEAK:AIO’s metadata technology with NetApp ONTAP, the company expects to offer an architecture that retains ONTAP’s resilience, security and operational capabilities while introducing greater scalability for AI workloads.

PEAK:AIO Technology to Expand Metadata Capabilities

PEAK:AIO’s technology originated through collaborations with research institutions including Los Alamos National Laboratory and Carnegie Mellon University. The technology was developed to address demanding data-intensive computing requirements.

Under the proposed integration, PEAK:AIO’s specialised metadata services and parallel namespace capabilities will be incorporated into NetApp’s ONTAP-based data architecture. The companies also intend to provide an evolution path for existing ONTAP customers.

Building Infrastructure for Large-Scale AI Workloads

PEAK:AIO’s technology is designed to extend metadata scalability, provide a global namespace and enable parallel NFS-based access for massively parallel workloads.

NetApp, meanwhile, brings its ONTAP platform, data infrastructure expertise, global customer base and operational capabilities to the proposed combination. Together, the companies expect to develop capabilities aimed at simplifying the deployment and management of shared storage across increasingly large AI environments.

The planned architecture is intended to support environments containing trillions of files and multi-exabyte deployments while maintaining the resilience, security and operational simplicity associated with ONTAP.

Built around the requirements of large-scale AI environments, the approach combines scalable metadata services, standards-based parallel NFS access and ONTAP as the underlying data foundation.

According to NetApp, the architecture could help reduce data-related GPU stalls, improve infrastructure efficiency and enable organisations to accelerate AI development and deployment.

The proposed transaction represents another step in NetApp’s efforts to evolve its data infrastructure architecture for the demands of AI-driven workloads. By bringing together PEAK:AIO’s metadata innovations and NetApp’s ONTAP platform, the companies aim to address the growing need for scalable shared storage across AI factories and AI cloud environments.
