Sandipan Aich is the General Manager – Corporate Relations and PR for the K.K. Birla Group of Sugar Companies. In his current role, he leads corporate communications, public relations, and stakeholder engagement initiatives across the Group’s sugar businesses, with a focus on strengthening reputation, driving strategic communication, and building long-term stakeholder trust.

He previously served as Assistant General Manager with the Merlin Group, where he handled corporate communications and brand positioning in the real estate sector, contributing to integrated communication strategies and external engagement.

Earlier, he worked as Assistant Director at the Indian Chamber of Commerce, where he was closely involved in industry advocacy, policy dialogue, and corporate government interface initiatives.

With experience spanning industry associations, real estate, and the corporate sectors, he brings a strong understanding of stakeholder engagement, policy communication, and strategic public relations.

In this exclusive conversation with Media Mohalla MM Talk’s, Sandipan Aich shares insights on entrepreneurship, digital evolution, industry trends, and the importance of authentic storytelling in today’s fast-changing media landscape.

1. Corporate communications today is no longer limited to reputation management. How do you see the role evolving in an era driven by real-time narratives, digital scrutiny, and stakeholder transparency?

Ans: At Birla Sugar, we see corporate communications as a strategic function that goes beyond reputation management. In today’s environment of real-time narratives and digital transparency, communication plays a critical role in building trust with all stakeholders from farmers and communities to investors, employees, and consumers. Our focus is on transparent, consistent, and purpose-driven communication that reflects our commitment to sustainable growth, operational excellence, and community engagement.

2. With brands increasingly focusing on thought leadership and executive visibility, how important is personal branding for communication leaders in today’s corporate ecosystem?

Ans: We believe effective communication leadership is not just about visibility, but about creating meaningful engagement around the company’s vision, values, and long-term commitment to stakeholders. When communication leaders and executives consistently share informed perspectives with authenticity and clarity, it enhances both corporate reputation and organisational credibility. A credible and authentic voice from leadership helps build trust, strengthen stakeholder confidence, and humanise the organisation.

3. In your experience, what separates impactful corporate storytelling from conventional brand communication that often gets lost in the noise?

Ans: In my experience, impactful corporate storytelling is rooted in authenticity, relevance, and purpose. Unlike conventional brand communication, which often focuses only on promotion, meaningful storytelling connects with stakeholders on a deeper level by reflecting real values, experiences, and impact.

At Birla Sugar, we believe stories become impactful when they are backed by action  whether it is our engagement with farming communities, sustainability initiatives, operational excellence, or employee contributions. Stakeholders today are looking for credibility and human connection, not just messaging. What truly cuts through the noise is communication that is transparent, consistent, and aligned with the organisation’s larger purpose and long-term vision.

4. As media consumption habits rapidly shift toward digital and short-form platforms, how should communication professionals adapt without compromising credibility and depth?

Ans: We see this as a balance between format and substance. The medium may evolve  from long-form narratives to concise, platform-specific content but the core message must remain consistent, factual, and value-driven.

The key is to simplify communication without oversimplifying the message. This involves using digital platforms to enhance accessibility and engagement, while ensuring that detailed, credible information remains available for stakeholders who seek deeper understanding. In essence, agility in delivery must go hand-in-hand with discipline in content.

Ultimately, credibility is built not by the length of communication, but by its consistency, transparency, and alignment with organisational truth.

5. There is growing pressure on brands to respond instantly during crises. How do you balance speed, accuracy, and brand reputation in high-pressure communication scenarios?

Ans: In today’s always-on digital environment, the expectation for instant response during a crisis is real and unavoidable. However, effective crisis communication is about balancing speed with accuracy, while safeguarding long-term brand trust.

At Birla Sugar, we believe that preparedness is the foundation of speed. Having clear protocols, predefined response frameworks, and aligned internal stakeholders enables timely communication without compromising factual accuracy. While speed is important to address stakeholder concerns early, it should never come at the cost of correctness. Even a brief acknowledgement, when necessary, followed by verified updates, helps maintain transparency and control the narrative responsibly.

6. Having observed the communications industry closely, what key skills do you believe the next generation of PR and corporate communication professionals must develop to stay relevant in the next five years?

Ans: In the coming years, professionals who can combine storytelling with analytics, and creativity with credibility, will be best positioned to stay relevant and lead effectively. Equally important is strategic thinking the ability to connect communication outcomes with business objectives  along with agility in managing fast-changing narratives. Emotional intelligence, ethical judgement, and authenticity will continue to differentiate good communicators from great ones.
