Paul Christiano Joins OpenAI Foundation Board

OpenAI has appointed AI alignment researcher Paul Christiano to the board of its nonprofit OpenAI Foundation, adding his expertise in AI safety and alignment to the organisation’s governance structure.

Christiano will also join the Foundation’s Safety and Security Committee (SSC), chaired by Carnegie Mellon professor Zico Kolter. He will serve as a non-voting observer on the board of OpenAI Group PBC.

Christiano Returns to OpenAI’s Governance Structure

Christiano previously worked at OpenAI from 2017 to 2021, where he led alignment research and contributed to foundational work on reinforcement learning from human feedback (RLHF).

Following his time at OpenAI, he founded the Alignment Research Center. He currently serves as a Senior Technical Advisor at the US government’s Center for AI Standards and Innovation (CAISI), where he works on frontier AI safety and security.

Warning Over Rapid AI Progress

In a statement, Christiano highlighted the potential risks associated with rapidly advancing AI capabilities. He warned that continued progress could create a “catastrophic and irreversible loss of control” in the near term.

Among the risks he identified is the possibility of automated AI research creating a feedback loop that accelerates AI development. He also pointed to scenarios in which AI systems could pursue rewards in ways that undermine human control.

Focus on Safety Oversight

Christiano said his appointment should not be viewed as either an endorsement or criticism of OpenAI’s existing safety practices.

Instead, he described the role as an opportunity to contribute to safety oversight and advocate for stronger standards and externally verifiable evidence around AI safety.

His position on the Foundation’s SSC will place him alongside other experts focused on assessing and strengthening the organisation’s approach to safety and security.

OpenAI Highlights Christiano’s Expertise

OpenAI Chair Bret Taylor said Christiano’s background in AI alignment, safety standards and technical judgment would strengthen both the Foundation’s board oversight and the Safety and Security Committee.

The appointment adds an AI safety specialist with experience spanning research, independent alignment work and government advisory responsibilities to OpenAI’s nonprofit governance structure.

Continued Government Advisory Work

Christiano will continue his work advising the US government through CAISI alongside his new responsibilities at OpenAI.

To manage potential conflicts of interest, he will recuse himself from OpenAI-related matters and model evaluations in connection with his government advisory work.

Safety Debate Continues

Christiano’s appointment comes as the AI industry continues to debate whether safety frameworks and oversight mechanisms are advancing quickly enough to match the pace of frontier AI development.

His addition to the OpenAI Foundation board and SSC brings greater focus to alignment, safety standards and the need for evidence-based approaches as increasingly capable AI systems are developed and deployed.
