From Ideas to Impact: Mallika Tomar’s Journey of Building REVAMP

1. You and your husband built REVAMP from the ground up into a trusted partner for over 80 brands. Looking back, what were the biggest challenges you faced as an entrepreneur, and how did they shape your leadership journey?

Building REVAMP has been the most rewarding and the most humbling journey of my life. When we started, we didn’t have a fancy office, a big team, or investors backing us. We had to earn every client, every referral, and every opportunity. There were months when we questioned whether we were doing enough, pitched to companies that never responded, and worked weekends because saying “no” simply wasn’t an option.

One of the biggest lessons entrepreneurship taught me is that leadership isn’t about having all the answers – it’s about showing up consistently, especially when things aren’t going your way. During difficult phases, including navigating business uncertainties and personal challenges, I realised that my team looked to me for stability. Even when I didn’t have complete clarity, I had to create confidence.

Today, I lead very differently. I believe in guiding, letting the team work with ownership and building relationships before chasing results. The campaigns we create eventually end, but the trust you build with people stays. That’s the foundation on which REVAMP has grown, and it’s the leadership principle I carry with me every day.

2. Having worked with brands and institutions such as Amazon, Titan, NITI Aayog, and Akamai Technologies, what has been your approach to creating marketing strategies that balance business objectives with meaningful impact?

I’ve always believed that good marketing doesn’t begin with a campaign – it begins with understanding people. Whether I was working with Amazon Future Engineer to encourage girls to pursue computer science, supporting Titan’s Design Impact Movement, or creating strategies for commercial brands, my first question has always been the same: What change are we trying to create?

For a consumer brand, that change may be increasing market share or building loyalty. For a social-impact programme, it may be encouraging participation or changing perceptions. The metrics are different, but the principle is the same – you have to make people care. I also believe data and empathy need to work together. Analytics tell you what is happening; conversations with people tell you why. The strongest strategies I’ve built have come from combining both.

For me, success isn’t measured only in impressions or engagement. It’s measured by whether the communication actually influenced behaviour, strengthened trust, or helped the organisation achieve the outcome it set out to create.

3. Alongside leading REVAMP, you have established yourself as a lifestyle and travel creator. How has your creator journey influenced the way you understand audiences and build authentic brand narratives?

Being a creator has probably made me a better marketer than any textbook ever could. As a creator, you’re constantly reminded that people don’t engage with content because it’s perfectly produced – they engage because it feels genuine. I’ve learnt that audiences can immediately tell when you’re trying to sell something versus when you’re sharing something you genuinely believe in.

That perspective has changed how I approach brand strategy. Today, whenever we build campaigns at REVAMP, I ask myself a simple question: “Would I stop scrolling for this? Would I trust this if it appeared on my feed?”

Working on both sides of the table – as a marketer and as a creator – has also helped me understand the value of long-term storytelling over one-off campaigns. Brands are built through consistency, not virality. It’s a perspective I bring into every project because today’s audience doesn’t just buy products -they buy authenticity.

4. Your work spans both corporate marketing and social impact initiatives. Which campaign or project has left the most lasting impression on you, and what made it particularly meaningful?

Without a doubt, Amazon Future Engineer. Like many people, I initially saw it as another CSR programme. But the more closely I worked with the initiative, the more I understood that it wasn’t just about technology – it was about opportunity.

Listening to stories of young girls from underserved communities who were discovering coding for the first time made me realise that communication can genuinely change lives when it’s connected to the right purpose. Our responsibility wasn’t simply to create awareness; it was to ensure that the right students, parents, educators, and partners understood what the programme could unlock for them.

That project changed the way I think about impact. It reminded me that marketing isn’t always about selling something. Sometimes it’s about helping someone believe that an opportunity is meant for them. That’s a lesson I’ve carried into every project since.

5. As a woman entrepreneur and marketing leader, what advice would you give to aspiring women professionals who want to build successful careers while staying true to their own vision and values?

Don’t wait until you feel completely ready. If there’s one thing entrepreneurship has taught me, it’s that confidence doesn’t come first – action does. Most of us spend too much time worrying whether we’re experienced enough, qualified enough, or capable enough. The truth is, you grow into those roles by taking them on.

At the same time, don’t build your career by trying to imitate someone else’s definition of success. Build it around your own values. There will always be pressure to chase bigger titles, bigger numbers, or faster growth. But I’ve learnt that sustainable success comes from consistency, integrity, and the quality of relationships you build along the way.

Most importantly, remember that asking for help doesn’t make you weak. Every meaningful milestone in my career has been possible because of people who believed in me, challenged me, and supported me. Your career is a marathon, not a sprint. Focus on becoming someone people trust, and the opportunities will follow.
